Games and sports.

English is a funny language; its complex features, structure, and usage can still pose questions to even fluent speakers of the language.

“What is the definition of play”?

Or even better, “what is the difference between a game and a sport”? These are questions to which we may never find a complete answer. While activities such as cricket, tennis, basketball, or baseball can be called games or sports, horse riding and hunting cannot just be called “games“; the term “sport” suits them better.

Many dictionaries and thesauri affirm that the two words are synonyms, although the term “sport” may have originally been used to describe an activity that means varying degrees of physical exertion. Games and sports are both pastimes and competitions between individuals or groups, but the term “games” is largely used in an umbrella context to encompass activities that require physical prowess, mental ability, and other refined skills. In recent decades, usage of the term has expanded to denote many activities-card games, children’s games, online games, board games, paper games, parlour games, and many others that are sometimes based on sporting activities such as cricket, tennis, baseball, track and field events, etc.

However, the broader view is that while a game can be a sport and vice versa, the use of the term “sport” seems to define it as an activity in which energy, skills, and wits are deployed against another individual or a team with the ultimate goal of winning. A game, on the other hand, can also be played as a leisure activity. In the modern world, a sport like cricket, tennis, baseball, badminton, etc. can also be a full-time job or career, which is not the case for card games or online games.

Games have always been a part of human culture and evolution; they can be found in cultures dating back to 2600 BC and are a universal part of the human experience. There has been no society in the past that was devoid of games and sports. Historically, the ancient Greek civilization brought the concept of games and sports into a broader game, and even today we celebrate the Olympic Games on a global level.

Definition of ‘game’

In the late 1800s, the Austro-British academic philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, of Austro-British descent, was the first academic philosopher to venture a definition of the term “game.” Wittgenstein’s strong suit was logic, and he worked on a variety of theories in the philosophies of language, mathematics, and mind. His argument was that the “elements” that govern a game, such as play style, rules, and competition, do not sufficiently define what games are. He concluded that “game” or “games” applied to a wide variety of activities that were so different and barely resembled each other. Over the years, many others have expressed differing views, but the universal view held today is that of Bernard Suits. Suits defined play as an “activity undertaken to achieve a specific result, using only methods determined by specific rules.” Thus, the argument that the “methods determined by specific rules” are more limited in scope by the absence than by the presence of rules, and the only reason to accept these limitations is to ensure that such activities can be undertaken, won the day and is today seen as the generally accepted definition.

A game is a game with a structure and rules; it is primarily an activity undertaken for fun and leisure and sometimes as an educational tool. A “game” is different from a “sport” that can generate compensation. But the distinction is blurred and is not always clear.

Games usually involve physical and mental stimulation and the main components are: goals, rules, challenges, and interaction.

In addition, most games help develop practical skills and serve as forms of exercise and stimulation. They embody a unique characteristic of human activity and, while the fun aspect is dominant, they also instil positive qualities such as discipline, cooperation, teamwork, and the spirit of freedom.
